What Is a Pip?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest standard unit of price movement in a currency pair. For most forex pairs, a pip is a movement of 0.0001 in the exchange rate. For JPY pairs, a pip is a movement of 0.01 because the Japanese yen is quoted to two decimal places.
Understanding pip values is essential for managing risk in forex trading. The dollar value of a pip determines how much you gain or lose per pip of price movement, which directly affects your position sizing and risk calculations.
How Pip Value Is Calculated
USD quote pairs (EUR/USD, GBP/USD, AUD/USD, NZD/USD):
Pip Value = Lot Size × 100,000 × 0.0001 = Lot Size × $10
USD base pairs (USD/JPY, USD/CHF, USD/CAD):
Pip Value = Lot Size × 100,000 × Pip Size / Exchange Rate
Cross pairs (EUR/GBP, EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY):
Pip Value = Lot Size × 100,000 × Pip Size × (converted to USD)
Why Pip Values Change
Pip values are not fixed for all currency pairs. They depend on the exchange rate of the quote currency relative to your account currency. For pairs where USD is the quote currency, such as EUR/USD, the pip value is always exactly $10 per standard lot. However, for pairs like USD/JPY, the pip value changes as the USD/JPY exchange rate fluctuates.
Lot Sizes Explained
- Standard lot — 100,000 units of the base currency. A 1-pip move is worth approximately $10 for USD-quoted pairs.
- Mini lot — 10,000 units (0.1 lots). A 1-pip move is worth approximately $1.
- Micro lot — 1,000 units (0.01 lots). A 1-pip move is worth approximately $0.10.
Note: The exchange rates used in this calculator are approximate and based on recent market values. For live trading, always check pip values with your broker, as exchange rates fluctuate constantly.
